How to Safely Kickstart a Motorcycle
1. Check the basics first! Before you even touch the kick lever, make sure: The bike is in neutral. Spin the rear wheel or check the neutral indicator light to confirm. The ignition is ON. The fuel valve (petcock) is open. The choke is set correctly (usually ON when the engine is cold, OFF when warm).
2. Position the motorcycle
Stand on the left side of the bike.
Make sure the kickstand is up (some bikes won’t start if it’s down).
Hold the handlebars straight for balance.
3. Find top dead center (TDC)
Slowly press the kickstarter lever down with your foot until you feel strong resistance — that’s the compression stroke.
Let the lever come back up slightly from that point — this is the best position for a strong kick.
4. Get ready to kick
Place your right foot firmly on the kick lever.
Keep your body stable and slightly lean forward.
Don’t twist the throttle yet (unless your bike specifically needs a little gas to start).
5. Kick with purpose
Give a strong, smooth, full kick all the way down — don’t jab or half-kick.
As you kick, keep your right knee bent slightly and your arms steady for control.
6. Follow through
Let the kick lever return on its own — don’t let it snap up uncontrolled.
If the engine doesn’t start, repeat from step 3.
After it starts, adjust the choke as needed and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
